Agnieszka Wszolkowska was born in Poland and received her BA in Fine Arts from Rutgers University, with a concentration in painting and anthropology and Masters of Educations from Seton Hall. She is currently on the faculty of the Yard School of Art in Montclair, NJ, and Art Educator at Rosa Parks Community School in Orange, NJ. She lives and works in Jersey City, where she has been regularly featured on the Jersey City Artist Tour. Her work has been exhibited in group and solo shows in New Jersey and internationally.

Statement:

I am an Immigrant. I came to the United States when I was thirteen years old. This past year has been challenging, it’s been difficult to find my space as an immigrant in the shared experience of America. I navigate American culture both as an individual person and as the liaison for my family. There are so many extra steps for me, knowing that family members still have trouble communicating in English. Knowing the legacy of my Polish culture and American culture at times it’s difficult to grasp. Living between these two spaces I am very aware that I’m not entirely Polish and I am not entirely American.

My work is the place I feel at home. Within my projects, I find a way to articulate my experiences in a way words do not allow me.

After the passing of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, I began reading articles that discussed her polish heritage. I noticed her signature collar was similar to one I wore as a child as a required part of my uniform for school.
